Are you interested in telemedicine?

Do you use technology to help deliver health care?

Are you thinking of establishing links with the Korean health sector?

Are you looking for new business opportunities in the Far East?

If you answered yes to any of the above, this seminar is for you.

The DTI has recently supported a fact-finding mission to Korea. The purpose of the mission was to find out about telemedicine and related technologies in that country. During its stay, the mission team visited many hospitals and companies, and met with some of the influential players in the technology, health, academic and government sectors.

This seminar provides the mission team with an opportunity to report back on what it found, and for British organisations to find out more about this exciting country and its healthcare system.

The seminar will be of interest to:

  • anyone with an interest in telemedicine or health informatics
  • anyone with existing or prospective business relationships with Korean or other Far Eastern companies

Why Korea?

South Korea is a highly industrialised nation, known for her effective application of new technologies to improve products, processes and services. With her growth into one of the world's leading economies, and the affluence that comes with it, attention is increasingly being placed on the needs of the nation's health and well being. Although Korea is a young country in demographic terms, it nevertheless has a quickly ageing population. Expectations of a first world level of health care are high; and they can afford it!

Given Korea's innovation and prowess in the application of technologies in the manufacturing sector, she is (not surprisingly) applying the same innovation towards the health and medical sector.

Therefore, the technologies and industrial practices covered by this mission are areas of common interest and importance in both South Korea and the UK. There is much to learn from each other.

Finally, the lesson from the 1997 financial crisis has been Korea's previous over reliance on the US and Japanese markets. Korean industry is currently looking towards improved trade and collaboration with the EU, with the UK being a favourable first stop. Our mission will hopefully lead to new collaborative relations with Korean users and providers of telemedicine technologies.
